I’ve been considering learning RUBY for sometime now, as with many other things that are clogging my TO DO List marked as “To Learn”. π
But one thing’s sure, once I get igBlog‘s first version out, I’m gonna start picking up on RUBY & ASP.NET(maybe but chances of it are 95%). π
There aren’t many RUBY developers around here, so I really don’t know whether it’ll be an advantage or dis-advantage, but still, it’ll look good on my ResumΓ©, knowing a language that none/few people know here. π
And Python has been added to my TO DO List(heck, its increasing all the time). I don’t know much about it but people have said that Python & RUBY are somewhat similar. I dunno, but if that’s true then it won’t be tough learning Python after learning RUBY. But then people have also said that Python isn’t tough to learn. Its quite easy, so there. π
But what has been disappointing is that no books on RUBY are available here. Though there are quite some good books on it but none is available here. I think that I’ll have to do with whatever I can find online, along with RUBY docs.
But a good book that I found is Programming Ruby – The Pragmatic Programmer’s Guide, which is available online for FREE.
This book also has a paperback edition available at Amazon, which ofcourse is NOT FREE. π π
Yeah, learning RUBY is quite easy. And it has all the OOP that you’ll ever need. Even though it hasn’t gained the popularity that it should’ve, its cool outright.
I just love RUBY. Mind you, I switched from Python to RUBY. Though Python is easy & powerful too, I just never got back at it after I learned RUBY. π
RUBY?? eh?? π
I say that go for Python first, you get everything you want in it & the community is way more big & active than the RUBY doers. So that means constant development of the language & better support should you run into any hard spots. π
Willy, I’m not going in for RUBY just because I need to learn a language to do softwares & stuff. I know VB & Java for that & my VC++ isn’t too bad at all. π
I’m going in for RUBY because from what little code I’ve seen of it, it looks exciting(having conditional blocks etc just like VB). Also, I’m going for it because I want to add another language to my Resumé. π And I’ll go for Python too, don’t worry. π
Sounds like you’ve got a lot on your plate! I’ve been looking into Python too. I got the absolute basics of it down in one night just looking through http://diveintopython.org/, but haven’t touched it in a few weeks (hey, I have other work to do before a “hobby” programming language unfortunately). Hopefully I can get back to it, it’s a nice language.
Yeah, I’ve got a lot on my plate, more than I can handle, frankly speaking. And yes, I’ve got other important work to do before devoting time to some thing like learning a new language.
I can’t say much about hobby, since computers & internet is what my work about & my work is my hobby too. π
Thanks for the link. I’ll look it up. π
