Macromedia + Eclipse = Zorn!!

  1. Eclipse is a great IDE – I develop GeSHi with it. Native CVS integration is one reason to switch alone.

And as for speed: It takes a while to start (though my 3.2gHz P4 starts it pretty quick), and doesn’t really run slow at all! It will consume a bit of CPU and RAM but that’s to be expected from something so powerful.

Even my laptop (an 800mHz P3, 256M of ram) can run it just fine!

It’s a great IDE, I suggest you give it a try (if you can handle the 90M download for 3.1RC1…)

  2. One thing that you must’ve not noticed is that when you have Eclipse open & then you minimise & do other work & then open Eclipse window again after some time(say 20-25 minutes), it’ll appear to be black & only after a few minutes(1-2 minutes) it’ll get back normal. This is a problem with which all Java based IDEs are plagued, even Zend.

I suggest you give it a try (if you can handle the 90M download for 3.1RC1Ò€¦)

I’ll sure give it a try maybe later!! And yes I can handle 90MB download, its not a big deal, I’m currently downloading Solaris 10 which weighs 2GB!! πŸ˜‰

  3. Nope, I’ve never noticed that problem – I’ve suspended Eclipse to RAM even and it works just fine. I’ve used it on a P3, a P4 w/ HT (both running Debian) and on NetBSD, and my friends have run it on various versions of windows and we’ve never seen that…

  4. That’s very strange as I’ve seen it & a bit of sluggish performance in all Java based applications on all versions of Windows above Win2000. Even on high end machines with 2.8Ghz processors & 512MB RAM.

Maybe I’ll download Eclipse & see what’s the buzz is all about!! πŸ˜€

  5. Well of course, I’m using Debian sarge, so I don’t have as much to worry about re. the performance – you’ve got XP trying to run viruses and drawing alpha-channel rounded corners on windows πŸ˜‰

But I do advise you to give it a try, and I’m happy to give you any assistance with it, because it’s the best all-round IDE I’ve ever used.

  6. youÒ€ℒve got XP trying to run viruses and drawing alpha-channel rounded corners on windows

had it been WinXP, I’d not be bothered about performance on a 2Ghz processor with 512MB RAM. WinXP’s performance is great once you’ve tweaked it & disabled all the useless stuff while still keeping the eye-candy. the fact is that the 2000 server takes up a lot of CPU & RAM & thus performance is a problem here!! I think I need a dual core 3Ghz processor & 1-2 GB of RAM to run it well!! πŸ˜‰
