Posted by on in iDevelop | 0 comments

WordPress 1.2 Beta was released a few days ago. There’s buzz in the air around WP users & the features in the new version has me interested too, especially the new Plugin system which allows Drop-and-Use feature for hacks, err sorry, they are called Plugins now. ๐Ÿ˜‰
And ofcourse, encryption of passwords is being introduced in v1.2 a feature which was missing earlier & which surprised me when I discovered it within minutes of completing my installation. ๐Ÿ˜
WordPress 1.2 Beta packages are available at http://wordpress.org/beta/ as usual. ๐Ÿ˜‰

WindowsXP SP2 Beta Released

Posted by on in iNews | 0 comments

A technical preview or in other words, a Beta of the much awaited SP2(Service Pack 2) of WindowsXP has been released & is available at Microsoft website at www.microsoft.com/sp2preview/ & its a fair sized download, about 270MB. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The final release is expected around November this year, so this Beta can be expected to have quite a number of bugs. ๐Ÿ˜‰
SP2 detects Norton Antivirus if its installed & does automatic virus updates. But 2 good improvements that Microsoft has brought about in SP2 are, an improved firewall(that was just a basic firewall until now) & due to popular demand, a pop-up blocker in IE. ๐Ÿ˜€

GMail :: An Afterthought!!

Posted by on in iNews | 0 comments

Well, the buzz is still there about GMail(Google’s foray into free eMail market) & most people do want to get a piece of it.
But a thought that struck me was about GMail’s SPAM Filters. Its true that Yahoo! & Hotmail have the largest subscriber base & the way people are buzzing, there’ll be a stampede to register accounts once GMail is opened to public. ๐Ÿ˜‰
True that 1GB of storage(what GMail will offer) is an enormous amount but one of the most critical aspects of any eMail solution today is its ability to filter out SPAM. And Hotmail has one of the best SPAM filters & Yahoo! is improving day by day too. Now the question is, will GMail have good enough SPAM filter(s)? Because if its not going to have any good SPAM filter(s), the 1GB of storage won’t hold much appeal to public since they’ll not want to do away with SPAM every day when they check their eMail. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜

SE Friendly URLs in ASP for IIS

Posted by on in iDevelop | 1 comment

Most of us know what a SE(Search Engine) Friendly URL is.
Like if a URL is
https://igeek.info/test.php?id=1
its SE Friendly version can be
https://igeek.info/test/1/

Now, there’s a module by name of mod_rewrite available for Apache Webserver through which you can achieve this clean look of URLs. But there’s no such thing for ASP with IIS available. Ofcourse there are some commercial ISAPI Filters/COM DLLs available for this kind of thing but then, since most of us are on shared webservers, we can’t use these ISAPI Filters/COM DLLs. The webhosts don’t allow them to be registered on the server.

WP Hack:- The mmYY Search

Posted by on in iDevelop | 0 comments

When I downloaded WP(WordPress) for the first time & had endless problems running it, I never thought that in barely a month’s time, I’d have my own WordPress powered Blog up & running & I’d be writing my own custom hacks for it, since I barely knew PHP then(till last month). ๐Ÿ˜‰
But my determination has brought me here so far & it was it which made me learn PHP, install WP & now, I know enough PHP to write some basic but useful Hacks for WP. ๐Ÿ˜€
Now that I’ve my WP powered Blog up & running for about a month, I think that its time to get the inside look on this popular Blog script. I’ve been in between a rock & a hard place all this April, coordinating my workload with my PHP encounters & I’m happy that I’ve been improving with each encounter.
When I was able to install WP, I ported my month & year based search hack from my old blog to WP. ๐Ÿ˜‰
But today I’ve made it a proper WP Hack, using the my-hacks.php file & encapsulating the code snippet into a function. You can try it by selecting the month & year from the drop-down lists below the calendar on your right side. ๐Ÿ˜€

Towards OOP in PHP

Posted by on in iDevelop | 1 comment

I think that its time that I structure my PHP code more efficiently. I mean that I think its time that I move onto OOP(Object Oriented Programming) in PHP, I think that I know enough of PHP by now to venture into the world of OO. ๐Ÿ˜‰

After building my first PHP based website fully powered by MySQL Database(http://www.igeek.info/), I now know that though connecting to MySQL database in PHP is quite easy, it can be further simplified by making re-usable functions to execute the same lines of code instead of writing them again & again. ๐Ÿ˜€
In any pages that utilise a database connection & do some manipulation be it getting some results or insertion of data or updation etc, it would be foolish to write down the same lines of code(for connecting to database) again & again. I never did that even in ASP, then why should I do it in PHP? ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜

History being made, after 50 Years

India won their first ever Test Series in Pakistan after 50+ years of toil. It was a dream come true. It is not a victory but a moment, a joy, that will be savoured, former Indian Skipper & bowling great Kapil Dev said. ๐Ÿ˜‰
Playing in Pakistan after a decade, no one in the team, except batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, had played Pakistan in their own backyard. Pakistan has always been strong at their home but Indian Team won not only the Test Series but also the preceding One Day Series. ๐Ÿ˜€
Sourav Ganguly, known as Prince of Calcutta, became the first Indian Cricket Captain who lead a victorious Test Side from Pakistan. This Indian Team has been hailed as the best ever by the Indian Cricket Greats of past, who’ve toured Pakistan & have failed to win there. ๐Ÿ˜‰
After giving Aussies a scare(by winning the Adelaide Test) in the their last series in Australia, India defeated Pakistan by an innings & 131 runs in Rawalpindi(after beating them by an innings & 52 runs in Multan), proving that they are the 2nd best test team in World Cricket after Australia. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Indian Team is already the 2nd best One Day Team after Australia, ๐Ÿ˜‰ being the finalists in the World Cup 2003 which was held in South Africa, Zimbabwe & Kenya in March last year. ๐Ÿ˜€
Just can’t describe how happy I am. Its just too good. ๐Ÿ˜€

Gmail Woes :: Its Troubled Waters!!

Posted by on in iNews | 0 comments

It seems that Google has stepped into troubled waters with GMail. With privacy concerns rising all over due to Google’s proposal that it will scan all out going eMail messages & place ads in it, relevant to the content, one trouble is ending only to welcome another trouble. ๐Ÿ˜€
It seems that while the Brits have no problem with GMail scanning outgoing messages & placing ads relevant to the context of the message, the Californians are pretty much irked up on this. And Senator Liz Figueroa, a Democrat from Fremont, California, said that she’s  drafting a legislation that will block GMail(with its present stand on scanning outgoing eMails to place context relevant ads) from California. ๐Ÿ˜
Seems like Google has its hands fuller than they thought it will be. But I think that they must’ve anticipated this kind of reaction from people & public bodies, after all, they are not a bunch of dunderheads!! ๐Ÿ˜‰
So, all Google can say is that its considering changes in GMail. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜€
